Modified Irritable Bowel Diet

The purpose of a modified Irritable Bowel Diet is to provide a less irritable, healthy diet for the GI tract. An IBS diet will facilitate a symptom-free state and regulate the GI tract. The diet teaches those with IBS how to avoid most gas-forming foods, and foods which leave significant residue within the intestinal tract.

IBS Diet Tips

There are several foods and tips that can help an IBS sufferer. Some tips include:

  1. Eat three regular meals per day. Try to eat your meals at the same time each day.
  2. Drink at least 8 to 12 glasses of fluids per day.
  3. Avoid all raw fruits and vegetables
  4. Eat large quantities of cooked and canned fruits and vegetables, at least three portions of each.
  5. No citric fruit juices, such as orange, tomato, pineapple or grapefruit juices. This includes avoiding tomato pastes and sauces that are in Italian dishes.
  6. No milk or milk products. If you must drink milk everyday, you can use Vitamite (a milk substitute) or a non-dairy coffee creamer such as Coffee Rich. You can dilute Coffee Rich with water and then refrigerate.
  7. No soft cheese like American or Velveeta. You may have aged cheeses such as Colby, Swiss or Cheddar.

NOTE OF ENCOURAGEMENT: You may notice improvement right away and you may not. It usually takes about two months to obtain maximum effect. And remember – you have to follow your diet religiously!
